Island story
John Ralph Hooper was born in 1916 to Lester and Annabell (MacLean) Hooper. Before enlisting on 9 July 1942, he had worked for about six years as a fisherman and about two years at the Trenton Steelworks, and he had militia experience with the 2nd Battalion, Pictou Highlanders. His military training included welding and engineering work, and he served for a period as a sapper and with the Canadian Engineer Reinforcement Unit before transferring to the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in Normandy in September 1944. His final verified service was as Lance Corporal F/79900, Lincoln and Welland Regiment, R.C.I.C. On 26 January 1945, aged 28, he was mortally wounded during Operation ELEPHANT at Kapelsche Veer in the Netherlands. He is buried at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Grave XVI.A.2. His recorded campaign/service medals were the 1939–1945 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939–1945, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. On Pictou Island, his parents’ Pioneer Cemetery memorial R2-001 also bears his name; this is Island commemoration, not his burial. MacCallum’s honour-roll list records “R.C.E.T.C.” beside Ralph’s name; that wording is retained as historic remembrance and is not his final regiment.

Incomplete names and identity candidates
Name and accepted-alias matches appear before initials-only possibilities. Within each group, records with no known date conflict and an accepted connection to the selected relative appear first. This is an evidence ordering, not a probability. Compare generation, known relatives, census units, memorials and dated sources in each record. No suggestion changes a family relationship.

Sidney Willard Hooper
Sidney Willard Hooper
Sidney Willard Hooper is identified in family records as a son of Lester and Annabell MacLean Hooper and brother of John Ralph. His marriage to Delta Priscilla Thurber on 1 July 1943 at the First Presbyterian Church manse in Pictou describes him as twenty-five, a soldier at Camp Petawawa, born in New Glasgow and resident on Pictou Island. It explicitly names Lester Hooper and Annabell MacLean as his parents. A contemporary New Glasgow birth entry records Wilfred Sydney on 5 April 1918 to Lester and Anna Bell McLean. The matching parents, place and cohort support a candidate, but the given-name correspondence remains qualified; that birth date is not silently assigned to Sidney Willard. The marriage’s soldier occupation does not establish a specific military unit or service file.
Isabel Louise Hooper Rankin
Isabel Louise Hooper Rankin
Isabel Louise Hooper married Vernon Leslie Rankin on 6 July 1944 at the First Presbyterian Church manse in Pictou. She was nineteen, born and resident on Pictou Island; her parents are explicitly named as Lester Hooper and Annabelle MacLean. Vernon, twenty-two, was an Island-born and resident farmer, with parents John A. Rankin and Mary M. MacDonald. This original supports the existing Isabel–Vernon spouse identity and connects Isabel to the Lester–Annabell branch. The stated ages do not establish exact birthdays. Isabel’s 2011 obituary describes raising their family on the Island before moving to Pictou; its marriage-duration wording does not override the original wedding date.
