Overview

Island story

Agnes MacCallum Patterson is commemorated with Charles D. Patterson at Pioneer Cemetery memorial R4-015. Their marriage registration records their wedding on 3 November 1891 and names her parents Hector and Jane. Her death registration records her death on Pictou Island on 21 January 1950, as the widow of Charles Patterson, and reports her birth as 17 January 1871 in Pictou. It names her father as Hector MacCallum and her mother as Jane MacDonald, both reported born in Scotland. These mutually supporting records establish the recorded parent pair; they do not identify a particular Hector/Jane branch or prove that Agnes was the niece named in Hugh MacDonald’s 1887 will. The 1931 census records Agnes, sixty, in the Charles Patterson household. Julia May’s death record and the children’s delayed birth registrations provide independent evidence for the family. Agnes’s death registration records Island burial on 24 January 1950 without naming a cemetery or plot. The birth date is retrospective. Violet Mae’s registration names Charles and Agnes as parents, but that biological-generation question remains unresolved.
