Overview

Island story

Annabell McCallum McLean is commemorated with Charles McLean at Pioneer Cemetery memorial R2-004, which records her McCallum maiden surname and death in 1922. Their original marriage registration records 6 May 1873 at Pictou and describes Annabell as twenty, born and resident on Pictou Island, with parents Donald and Annie. Isabella’s contemporary 1876 birth names her as Ann Bell McCallum; William and Daniel Hector’s later death records independently name the same Charles–Annabell parent pair. The accepted PIHS family reconstruction also includes Margaret Jane, Dolina Maud and Mamie Sophia. The Andrea Rankin Sibley collection preserves her portrait and a spinning-wheel photograph, identifying her as Annabel “Bella” McCallum. Her exact birth date and her parents’ wider identities remain open. Annie Bell McLean of Lansdowne, whose 1922 death names different parents, is a separate woman.
