Overview

Island story

Lauchlin Rankin was a Pictou Island lighthouse keeper. In the 1911 census he appears at page 3, line 18, family 20 as a thirty-three-year-old household head, single and born in April 1877. By 1931 he headed a household with his wife Katherine, their son Edward and Katherine’s aunt Ellen MacKenzie. Lighthouse research strongly links Lauchlin, also written Laughlin, Rankin with service as keeper of the South/Wharf light in two periods: first around 1910 until the December 1911 appointment of J. McLean, and again from about 1936 until his death in 1945. Local historical accounts also link him with farming and sawmill work. His Pioneer Cemetery memorial at R1-012 records 1877–1945 beside Katherine. He has not been identified in the 1921 Island census; his whereabouts at that time remain uncertain.
