Overview

Island story

Hilton Andrew McCully was born at Ward’s Brook in 1923, not on Pictou Island, but his work belongs in the Island’s educational and documentary history. His obituary records that his early teaching career included the one-room Pictou Island school in 1944. He later pursued a long career in education and, after retirement, wrote poetry, short stories and historical essays. PIHS and Nova Scotia archival records preserve his memoir material on Pictou Island in the 1940s, making him both a participant in and a later recorder of Island life.
