Overview

Island story

Hugh “Little Hughie” MacCallum is commemorated with Flora MacSwain MacCallum and their son William at Pioneer Cemetery memorial R2-016, which records Hugh’s years as 1862–1921. Their marriage registration records a wedding at Pictou on 29 October 1884. Hugh was a twenty-one-year-old bachelor farmer, born and resident on Pictou Island, and his parents were named Donald and Agnes; their wider identities are not assigned from those given names alone. Flora, twenty, was born and resident at High Bank, Prince Edward Island. The 1901 Island census records Hugh and Flora in family 14 with William. Later parent-bearing records connect Cora Jane, Dolina and Willena to this same family. Cora’s marriage and death name Hugh and Flora, while Willena’s 1922 marriage names her mother Flora McSwain. Flora’s 1939 death registration describes her as Hugh’s widow. That independently places his death before hers, but does not supply a more exact death date than the memorial’s 1921 year.
