Overview

Island story

John W. MacDonald is commemorated at Pioneer Cemetery memorial R4-001, which records 1883–1942. His accepted family reconstruction connects him with Hughena MacDonald: their original marriage registration records a Presbyterian marriage at Pictou on 20 July 1907. John W., a twenty-four-year-old bachelor farmer, and Hughena, seventeen, were both born and resident on Pictou Island. The registration names his parents as John C. and Maggie and hers as Angus and Adelina, without supplying the mothers’ maiden surnames. The 1921 and 1931 census records follow John W. and Hughena as a married couple; in 1931 he was forty-eight and a fisherman. Catherine Adeline’s delayed birth application names John William MacDonald and Hughena MacDonald as her parents, and a certified census extract connects Catherine with husband A. Roy MacCallum. Robertena’s contemporary 1909 birth and Hector Dan’s later birth and baptism records name the same parent pair. These records support the existing family connection without establishing John’s exact birthday or an exact burial location.
