Island story
Alfred H. MacLean was born on Pictou Island on 15 January 1936. His education and career did not follow an easy path: after leaving school in Grade Six to care for his mother, he returned to study and built a professional nursing career from practical nursing and Certified Nursing Assistant training through an R.N. diploma and, according to his obituary, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University in 1975. A contemporary report in The Casket of 28 May 1970 lists Alfred Herman MacLean of Pictou Island among the St. Martha’s nursing graduates and records him as second for general proficiency. That 1970 graduation and award are independently documented; the separately reported 1975 degree still awaits a person-matched university roll or programme. He worked in nursing supervision and education, including at St. Martha’s Hospital and the Aberdeen School of Nursing, before retiring in 1995. Alfred also maintained a direct Island cultural and religious role. His obituary records more than fifty years as organist of Sutherland Presbyterian Church on Pictou Island.
