Overview

Island story

Charlotte Margaret MacLean married Archibald “Archie” MacDonald and raised a family on Pictou Island. The 1931 census records their household with children Lexie, Henry, Frank and Logan. PIHS family research also connects Charlotte to Torquil and Isabella/Bell MacLean. Through Archie’s East Lighthouse service, Charlotte’s life belongs to the family side of lighthouse keeping as well as to the MacLean and MacDonald family histories. She and Archie are commemorated together at Church Cemetery memorial C-002. Her full delayed birth application records a birth on Pictou Island on 8 February 1901 to Torquil MacLean and Isabell MacLean. Archie T. MacDonald applied in October 1961 and is explicitly identified as her husband. A certified census-search letter quotes Charlotte, one month old, in the 1901 Turkle/Bella household and Charlotte M., ten, in the 1911 Torquil/Isabella household; a National Registration extract reports the same birth date. These are later extracts and an application, rather than newly inspected census ink or a contemporary birth record. Her 1919 marriage registration separately supports the Torquil/Isabelle parent pair.
