Overview

Island story

Charles D. “Charlie Dan” Patterson headed an Island household with his wife Agnes MacCallum Patterson; their shared Pioneer Cemetery memorial is R4-015. Their marriage registration records a wedding on 3 November 1891, with Charles a twenty-five-year-old farmer born and resident on Pictou Island and Agnes, twenty, born in Pictou and resident on the Island. His 1947 death registration records his death on Pictou Island on 25 August 1947 and burial there on 28 August, without naming a cemetery or plot. It describes him as a retired lightkeeper, records 1943 as the last year of work and fifty years in the occupation. The original Marine report records C. D. Patterson appointed on 29 March 1905 at $400; the existing keeper history identifies him with the West End station. A federal retirement return records Charles D. Patterson’s $499.98 annuity effective 30 January 1934. The 1933–34 salary accounts overlap with J. A. McDonald from August 1933, leaving the exact duty handover unresolved. The death registration’s later occupational report remains distinct from these appointment, accounting and pension dates. It reports his birth as 14 January 1865, retrospectively, and names Malcolm Patterson and Ann MacCallum as his parents. The 1891 marriage names his mother Mary instead; Ann and Mary are not silently treated as the same woman. Julia May’s death registration identifies Charles as her father and informant. Violet Mae’s 1944 registration also names Charles and Agnes as parents, but the biological-generation question remains unresolved and is not used to establish a genealogy link.
