Overview

Island story

Daniel Hector MacLean was a Pictou Island storekeeper and merchant. He was a different person from the younger Daniel H. in Big Hughie MacLean’s 1901 household. In 1921 Daniel H. appears as a forty-three-year-old household head and store keeper; in 1931 he appears as a fifty-two-year-old head and merchant in a general store. His 1944 Nova Scotia death registration names his parents as Charles MacLean and Anna Bell MacCallum, records his death on 15 April 1944 and burial on Pictou Island two days later, and gives a birth date of 26 October 1876. Later census ages and cemetery-derived 1878/1879 readings do not agree perfectly with that birth date, and his exact birth date remains uncertain.
