Overview

Island story

Elroy Dunn ‘Red Dunn’ MacCallum was born in Pictou in 1945, the son of Arthur Roy and Catherine (MacDonald) MacCallum, and lived much of his life on Pictou Island. His obituary traces a varied working life through food-processing and scallop work, employment with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation on Pictou Island, and then self-employment from 1976 as a lobster fisherman off the Island’s East End. He also learned carpentry from his father and became an accomplished woodworker. Ruth Munro’s 1984 store history identifies Dunn MacCallum, son of Roy, as the store’s then-current owner. That store role remains attributed rather than a proved title chain, but combined with his fishing, transportation and woodworking it makes Dunn an unusually well-rounded record of later twentieth-century Island working life.
