Flora MacSwain MacCallum

Island story

Flora MacSwain MacCallum is commemorated at R2-016 with Hugh MacCallum and their son William. Her 29 October 1884 marriage records her as twenty, born and resident at High Bank, Prince Edward Island, with parents Murdoch and Jessie. The 1901 census records her as Hugh’s wife in Island family 14. Cora Jane’s death registration names her mother Flora MacSwain of High Bank, and Willena’s marriage uses Flora McSwain. Flora’s own 1939 death registration describes her as Hugh’s widow, a housewife born in Prince Edward Island and resident on Pictou Island, who died in Pictou. It reports a birth date of 3 February 1864, differing from the memorial’s 1863 year. Its father’s surname is written MacShaw with given name Murdoch, and its mother’s maiden name is Jessie MacKenzie; the MacShaw reading is retained alongside the other records’ McSwain/MacSwain forms. The index gives death on 15 February 1939, while the medical field reads 16 February; that discrepancy remains unresolved. Burial on Pictou Island is recorded on 17 February without a cemetery or plot. The nurse informant’s stated relationship was nurse, and is not evidence of family kinship.
