Island story

Florence Rankin grew up in the Jack and Mary Rankin family on Pictou Island. Ruth Munro’s history includes Florence among their children and identifies Vernon Rankin’s sister as Mrs. Blaine MacKeil. Munro remembers Florence, Vernon and their family playing music at Island social functions and dances. The 1931 census records Florence as a daughter in John Rankin’s household, but its age entry is inconsistent. Later obituaries for sons John Henry and Blaine Alfred MacKeil corroborate the Blaine and Florence family identity. John Henry’s 2004 obituary identifies both parents as deceased, placing Florence’s death before 5 October 2004. Her exact birth and death dates remain unresolved. The original marriage records Florence Rankin marrying Blaine Edward MacKeil at the clergyman’s home in Scotsburn on 8 July 1943. Florence, eighteen, was resident on Pictou Island and described as helping her mother at home; her parents were John Rankin and Mary MacDonald. Blaine, twenty-four, was a Bay View farmer, with parents John MacKeil and Christina MacKay. A marginal annotation reads Rena, but its amendment basis has not been recovered; it is retained as an annotation rather than promoted to an accepted alias. The bride’s birthplace field says Pictou and is not expanded into an explicit Island birthplace. The music account is Munro’s recollection; it does not establish a particular instrument or performance date.
