Island story
John Alexander ‘Jack’ Rankin was a Pictou Island farmer whose household is unusually well represented in the surviving family record. Nova Scotia’s marriage register records John Rankin marrying Mary MacDonald at Pictou on 21 November 1910. The 1931 Pictou Island census index records John Rankin, age forty-eight, and Mary Rankin, age thirty-eight. Ruth Munro’s Island family list identifies Jack as a farmer and records their family, while the Rankin photographic collection repeatedly identifies Jack and Mary and their homestead. Family review identifies a general store building beside the homestead and a separate grain-storage building. PIHS interpretation also preserves the family account that Jack and Mary developed their home around the time of their marriage. These photographs and records make Jack’s biography a story of farming, household enterprise and family continuity rather than a gravestone-derived profile. Laura Catherine’s original delayed birth registration reports her birth on Pictou Island on 7 September 1911 and explicitly names John Alexander Rankin and Mary Munn MacDonald as her parents. Dolina Agnes’s delayed birth registration names the same parents in its account of a 1913 Island birth. Its main form and affidavit differ on 16/10 May, so the precise day remains qualified. The natal records support these daughter relationships; Laura’s and Dolina’s later married identities require their own evidence.
