Overview

Island story

Edward “Eddie” Glover was a well-documented Pictou Island boatman and winter mail carrier whose family is closely tied to the Island’s iceboat and transportation history. The 1921 and 1931 censuses place Edward with wife Anna and children including Ruth, Lavina and Elmer. PIHS historical material remembers Eddie for carrying winter mail and navigating the dangerous seasonal crossing. He is commemorated at R8-007 with Annie Jennie Glover. Elmer Carson Glover’s obituary names his parents as the late Edward Glover and Ona (MacCallum) Glover. Elmer was born on Pictou Island, spent most of his life in Toronto and retired to Pictou about a year before his death, aged sixty-six. It names brothers Kenneth and Gorman and predeceased sisters Ruth and Viona, and announces committal of his ashes at Seaview Cemetery. The year 1985 is handwritten on the clipping; an exact death date is not established. The maternal name Ona in this obituary differs from Anna in the census-based account and remains recorded as a source variant.
