Island story
Andrew H. Hogg followed William Hogg in the East End lighthouse keeper sequence and served for roughly two decades. A federal lighthouse inspection for 1877 directly names Andrew Hogg as keeper and records the working detail of the station: multiple lamps and reflectors, substantial oil use, winter-navigation lighting, repairs and a newly purchased station boat. Departmental-derived history also preserves Andrew’s account of the 19 April 1876 lantern fire, when an explosion left the lantern in flames and the light temporarily out of service. Pictou County Council minutes in 1883 place highway-surveyor instructions at Andrew Hogg’s Pictou Island residence, adding independent evidence of his Island household. PIHS identifies William as his brother and James W. Hogg as his son; exact vital records for those kinship links remain to be recovered.
