Island story

James W. Hogg continued the Hogg family’s East End lighthouse service after Andrew Hogg. PIHS’s keeper chronology places him in charge from 1881 until his resignation in 1892. His biography extends well beyond keeper succession. During the 1884 Inveralt salvage operation, PIHS research records James W. Hogg as acquiring salvage rights and later leading an Island rescue party after a wrecking lifeboat overturned in a gale. Government recognition records list a binocular glass for James W. Hogg, while other Island rescuers received silver watches. That convergence of lighthouse service, salvage work and rescue gives James one of the strongest non-cemetery nineteenth-century Island biographies in the collection. PIHS identifies him as Andrew Hogg’s son; a primary vital parent-child bridge remains desirable but is no longer necessary for the core occupational narrative.
