Island story

‘Deacon’ Charles MacCallum was a Pictou Island farmer whose household became deeply connected with the Island’s church, health, store and historical-memory stories. PIHS family and health research identifies Charles and Anne/Anna (Campbell) MacCallum as the parents of Margaret MacCallum MacDonald, the Island nurse, and John Malcolm MacCallum. In John Malcolm’s account preserved by Ruth Munro, Charles operated a substantial farm, did not depend on fishing, worked as a carpenter and built a large barn with lumber brought across the Strait. Church tradition names Charles MacCallum as one of the congregation’s first elders and associates his farm with the 1910 church site. The legal ownership and donation of the church land remain unresolved.
