Island story
John Malcolm MacCallum was born on Pictou Island on 1 June 1902. Nova Scotia’s birth registration fixes the date and place; Ruth Munro’s Pictou Island identifies him as the son of Charles and Annie (Campbell) MacCallum. Munro’s dedicated chapter follows John Malcolm from work on the family farm into service aboard the Stanley, where he described buoy and lighthouse-supply work along the coast. He later fished lobster on Pictou Island and left for the United States in 1925. Munro records his 1927 marriage to Barbara Rundle, a former Island teacher, and a later working life in Massachusetts before retirement in 1970. His importance to PIHS is also documentary: Munro repeatedly relied on John Malcolm’s recollections of farming, stores, hockey, the Life Saving Station, winter travel and Island community life. His exact death date has not yet been established.
