Island story
Hector MacCallum was part of a Pictou Island MacCallum family whose working life remained closely tied to the sea. An Iodhlann preserves a 1950s photograph of Hector with his brothers Duncan and Lachie Dan MacCallum and identifies the three men as lobster fishermen; it gives Hector’s lifespan as 1878–1953. The 1931 Island census records a Hector MacCallum aged fifty-two, consistent with that identity. Later Island history also associates Hector with two distinctive changes in everyday life. Ruth Munro records him as bringing an Overland automobile to the Island in 1922, although another retrospective account dates the first car to 1923, so priority remains qualified. Local-history research also identifies Hector as a skilled maker of coffins, part of the Island’s tradition of handling death and burial locally. Together these records show a fisherman whose practical skills reached well beyond the fishery. Hector MacCallum reported Pictou Island as his birthplace and residence when he married May Murdoch on 21 November 1917 at Pictou. Their marriage names Daniel McCallum and Catharine Munro as Hector's parents, and Robert Murdock and Maria Langille as May's. Hector worked as a farmer at the wedding. A 1920 birth/death return names their infant Isabel Katharine; Hector's own death record closes his life in 1953. May's later whereabouts and death have not been established.
