Overview

Island story

Helen Lorraine MacDonald grew up in the William C. “Bill Cole” MacDonald and Willena “Lena Bill” MacCallum family on Pictou Island. She married Arnold MacMillan, joining two families deeply connected with the Island fishery, and their son Billy continued that fishing tradition. Lorraine’s own life was woven through the community as well as the fishery. Her obituary records work at the Pictou Island Cook House, participation in Sunday school, the church Auxiliary and choir, and a lifelong interest in knitting, quilting, mat hooking and Island history. She also contributed to the Pictou–Antigonish Regional Library’s lobster oral-history project, helping preserve first-hand knowledge of Island fishing life. Lorraine and Arnold are commemorated together in the Church Cemetery at C-007.
