Island story

Allan MacFarlane and his wife Annie Wilkins MacCallum formed part of a large twentieth-century Pictou Island farm family. The 1931 census records Allan, age fifty-six, as a farmer operating a general farm and places him at the head of a household that included Annie and children John, Bert, Allena, Susan, Hugh, Wilma, Thelma and Helen. The same census evidence records sons John, Bert and Hugh working on their father’s farm, showing the household nature of Island agriculture. Their Pioneer Cemetery family monument at R9-017 commemorates Allan and Annie with Smith A. and Helen S. MacFarlane, while nearby R9-016 continues the family story through daughter Allena Mae Robertson and grandson James William Robertson. His contemporary birth registration records 18 December 1874 on Pictou Island and names John McFarlane and Nancy McCallum as his parents. His marriage to Annie Wilkins McCallum is recorded at Pictou on 21 July 1905, with parents John and Annie; his death registration records 2 August 1941 on the Island, the same birthday, parents John MacFarlane and Annie MacCallum, and his deceased wife Annie MacCallum. Nancy and Annie remain source-specific name variants. The marriage age of 28 conflicts with the contemporary birth year and is retained as reported. The death certificate’s Island burial entry does not establish an exact grave location.
