Island story
Arthur Roy MacCallum was born on Pictou Island in 1906 and appears in the 1931 census as Roy MacCallum in the Charles C. MacCallum household. He married Catherine MacDonald, and their family remained part of the Island’s twentieth-century community. Local-history sources connect Roy with carpentry, boatbuilding, lobster-factory work and the Island telephone system—work that reflects how Islanders often combined several practical skills and occupations rather than following a single trade. Roy was also one of the Islanders whose knowledge helped Ruth Munro preserve the Island’s history. His recollections and map work contributed details about transportation, industry, places and everyday life that might otherwise have been lost. Roy and Catherine are commemorated together in the Church Cemetery at memorial C-012.
