Island story
Flora MacPherson MacFarlane married Andrew MacFarlane on 12 August 1891 and shared the household associated with his later East Lighthouse service. The Pioneer Cemetery family memorial at R10-007 records Flora, Andrew, Mary Catherine and Mae C.R.N. MacFarlane. Census evidence and Kenneth MacCallum’s family history establish Flora as Andrew’s wife and as the recorded/social mother in the household, while the surviving sources give conflicting accounts of Mae’s biological parentage. The original marriage records Flora A. McPherson as 25, born at Caledonia, Prince Edward Island, resident on Pictou Island, with parents Angus and Maggie. Her death certificate records her death on the Island on 19 October 1931, wife of Andrew, aged 68, with father Angus McPherson, born at Glen Martin, PEI, and mother’s maiden surname McKenzie; no maternal given name is supplied there. Its reported Island birthplace and age differ from the marriage entry and remain qualified. A supporting certificate for John Robert uses Flora MacDonald, a conflicting source surname that does not overturn the marriage and death records or settle Mae’s biological-parentage question. Island burial is recorded on 20 October 1931 without an exact plot.
