George D. Rankin

Island story

George D. Rankin was part of the west-end Rankin farming family on Pictou Island. Ruth Munro’s local history describes the farm passing through four generations—from Duncan Rankin to his son Duncan, then to George, and later to George’s son Ernest, known publicly by PIHS as Ellwood Rankin. The 1931 census records George as head of a household with his wife Christena Whiteway and children Mae, Robert, Bertha, Ernest, Anna and Ida. George and Christena are commemorated together at R2-013 in the Pioneer Cemetery. The combination of farm continuity, census and cemetery evidence makes George an important bridge between nineteenth-century Island farming and the later twentieth-century Rankin story.
