Island story
Hugh “Big Hughie” MacLean was a Pictou Island farmer whose life connects the Island’s Gaelic community, agriculture, lighthouse service and working waterfront. The 1901 census places Hugh McLean in family 10 and records Gaelic as his mother tongue. Federal lighthouse evidence independently supports his lighthouse role. His 1910 will identifies Hugh McLean of Pictou Island as a farmer, provides for his wife Mary during her lifetime, and then for their daughter Annie Jane. PIHS South/Wharf-light research also connects Hugh with waterfront land later associated with a sawmill, lobster cannery, landing pier and the lighthouse project. Hugh and Mary are commemorated together at Pioneer Cemetery memorial R2-005. The shared memorial does not by itself establish where either person was buried. The original marriage registration records Hugh McLean, an Island-born farmer, marrying Mary McKenzie, a PEI-born widow, at Pictou on 24 April 1888. His parents are named as Hugh and Isabella. The groom’s age of 42 implies an earlier birth than the memorial’s 1849; the age conflict is retained. Mary’s McKenzie surname is an earlier married name, while mutually supporting family records identify her as Mary MacLean. The identity of her earlier husband remains unresolved. These records do not join this Hugh with the separately documented Fairfield, Fraser’s Mountain or Stellarton namesakes.
