Island story

Anna Jane MacLean became part of one of Pictou Island’s large twentieth-century families through her marriage to Donald William “Billy” MacMillan. Census and civil evidence identifies her as the mother of the MacMillan household whose children included Arnold, Charles Elwood, Lorne and Ethel Dophney among nine children documented in the wider family record. Her life connects the MacLean and MacMillan families and the Island’s fishing community. The Church Cemetery memorial she shares with Donald records her as Jane Ann, 1891–1971; PIHS preserves Jane Ann, Anna Jane and Annie Jane as source-name variants rather than treating them as different people.
