Island story

Margaret Catherine MacFarlane is commemorated with Robert MacFarlane, Anna Jessie and Clarence Leopold at Pioneer Cemetery memorial R10-008, which records her years as 1871–1930 and names Anna Jessie and Clarence Leopold as their daughter and son. The marriage registration names the bride Maggie Catherine McDonald, an Island-born and resident widow aged thirty-four, marrying Robert at Pictou on 29 August 1905. Her parents are named Archibald and Jessie; their wider identities are not assigned from given names alone. Because she was already a widow, the wedding surname McDonald is not by itself proof of her natal surname or the identity of her earlier husband. Anna Jessie’s death return and a later church certificate for Margaret Kathryn name the mother Margaret or Maggie MacDonald, independently corroborating the established Robert–Margaret family. Those later maiden-name statements are preserved alongside the wedding’s widow status. Her memorial date remains the evidence for her 1930 death year; these records do not establish an exact death date or original burial plot. Her 1905 marriage entry names her as Maggie Catherine McDonald, a 34-year-old widow born and resident on Pictou Island, with parents Archibald and Jessie. The 29 August marriage to Robert McFarlane connects her with the earlier widow Maggie: Margaret Catherine’s 1871 birth registration names Archibald McDonald and Jessie McKenzie and gives 23 February 1871, matching the 1901 widow’s recorded birthday. Alexander McDonald’s 1897 will and the established family genealogy identify her as his wife and the mother of Archie Thatcher. Robert was therefore Archie’s later household father; the 1911 designation son does not establish biological fatherhood or adoption.
