Family connections and Island stories
Arthur Roy and Catherine: a working Island family
Ruth Munro identifies Roy, born in 1906, as a son of Charles C. MacCallum and Christy Ann (MacDonald). Roy, aged twenty-four, appears with Charles and Christy in the 1931 census. These accounts appear to describe Arthur Roy MacCallum (1906–1991), remembered here with Catherine A. MacDonald. Munro’s family list also names Howard, Kenzie and Duncan. Howard’s age in the 1931 census is consistent with Howard E. MacCallum (1902–1980), whose memorial is paired with Jessie M. MacCallum (1910–1993). This family identification is probable, rather than certain.
Munro describes Roy’s farming, carpentry, boatbuilding and lobster work, including weighing lobsters from 1935. His home housed the Island telephone before its move in 1974. He contributed knowledge and maps to her Island history.
Elroy Dunn ‘Red Dunn’ MacCallum (7 November 1945–18 June 2008) was a son of Arthur Roy and Catherine (MacDonald) MacCallum. His wife was Rose Fraser; his siblings included Sterling, Diane Chaisson, Ardith Langille and Muriel. He learned carpentry from his father and worked for the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation on Pictou Island. In 1976 he acquired lobster gear and began fishing off the Island’s east end, continuing until illness led to his retirement in 2007. His funeral notice specified burial in Seaview Cemetery.
Before establishing his own lobster fishery, Dunn worked at McGees’ Pea Factory in Pictou and SeaBrook Farms in Prince Edward Island, and fished scallops in New Brunswick with Irving Dwyer. His work and family connections link Island history with communities beyond its shores.
