Overview

Island story

John H. MacLean, recorded as John Hector McLean in his marriage registration, married Margaret Ann McCallum at the First Church manse in Pictou on 20 April 1922. Both were born and resident on Pictou Island. He was recorded as a twenty-two-year-old bachelor farmer, with parents Torquil McLean and Isabelle McLean. Their son Gerald Oswald’s contemporary birth entry records 8 August 1922 on the Island and describes John Hector as a fisherman, aged twenty-five; the two reported ages disagree and do not establish his exact birthday. The 1931 census records fisherman John H., Maggie and their children Gerald, Joyce, Flossie, Anderson and Alvin. John and Margaret Ann are commemorated together at Church Cemetery memorial C-013, with daughter Joyce at C-014. Together the marriage, birth, census and memorial evidence connect the existing Island household to Torquil and Isabella/Bell’s family.
