Island story

Laughlin “Lauchie D.” MacCallum was a Pictou Island farmer and head of a well-documented MacCallum household. The 1931 census records Lauchie, age forty-nine, as a farmer operating a general farm; his household included children John, Ralph and Helen after the death of his wife Sophie Phillips MacCallum. Their Pioneer Cemetery memorial at R2-009 records Lauchie and Sophie together, with nearby memorials and footstones extending the family group. Surviving PIHS hearse-fundraising papers also name Lauchie D. MacCallum among Islanders contributing to the community effort to provide a vehicle for conveying the dead, adding a documented community role beyond his farm and household.
