John Alexander “Jack Happy” MacDonald

Island story

John Alexander “Jack Happy” MacDonald grew up in a large Pictou Island fishing family, the son of Angus Hector “Happy Angus” MacDonald and Adeline “Dollie” MacFarlane. Later accounts recall that he began working at the East End lobster factory while still a boy and then spent much of his life in the Island fishery. He also served as keeper of the West Lighthouse for many years. Biographical accounts report that he landed roughly 5,000 pounds of lobster in 1926; this is an attributed figure for Jack’s own fishing, not an Island-wide total. Jack married Margaret MacCallum, the Island nurse, and their sons included Keith and Ronald. His recollections became an important source for later Pictou Island history.
