Island story
John Alexander “Jack Happy” MacDonald grew up in a large Pictou Island fishing family, the son of Angus Hector “Happy Angus” MacDonald and Adeline “Dollie” MacFarlane. Later accounts recall that he began working at the East End lobster factory while still a boy and then spent much of his life in the Island fishery. He also served as keeper of the West Lighthouse for many years, linking his story to two of the Island’s defining working landscapes: the shore fishery and the lightstations. Jack married Margaret MacCallum, the Island nurse, and their sons included Keith and Ronald. His recollections became an important source for later Pictou Island history, preserving details of fishing, factory work, winter travel, lighthouse life and community memory.
