James Hooper

James Hooper

James Hooper married Dolina McCallum in Pictou in July 1910; the register is indexed to 23 July, with the handwritten day qualified. It describes James, twenty-two, as a fisherman born in PEI and resident on Pictou Island, and names David and Charlotte as his parents. His death registration records his death at Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on 16 July 1956. He was a married steelworks labourer resident at Pictou Landing; wife Dolina supplied the information. It reports a birth on 10 March 1888 in PEI and names David Hooper and Charlotte Buell as parents. Burial at Pictou Landing is recorded on 19 July. Children’s marriage records use James or John James with Dolina as the parent pair, supporting that given-name variation in this family. The PEI David/Charlotte family-tree candidate does not establish grandparents or an exact natal join. This household is separate from Lester and Annabell Hooper.

Delina / Dolina / Dollie McCallum Hooper

Delina / Dolina / Dollie McCallum Hooper

Dolina McCallum, also recorded as Delina or Dollie, married James Hooper in Pictou in July 1910. Her marriage describes her as twenty-four, born and resident on Pictou Island, and names Hugh and Flora as her parents. The existing family includes Leonard Victor, Roland Marr, Welsford Lewis and Elmer Douglas. Leonard’s marriage and death and Elmer’s marriage use Dolina with James or John James as their parent pair. Dolina was explicitly the wife informant on James’s 1956 death registration. Welsford’s mother is recorded as Dolly in his death entry and Delina in his marriage. Leonard’s marriage and death use John James and James for the same parental pair, supporting the paternal name variants. Welsford’s birth date and military-service chronology remain uncertain. The later records are not contemporary proof of the children’s birth dates. Dolina’s parents are further identified by Hugh McCollum and Flora McSwain’s 29 October 1884 marriage: Hugh was an Island-born farmer with parents Donald and Agnes; Flora was born at High Bank, with parents Murdoch and Jessie. Cora Jane’s marriage and death name the same parental household, supporting Dolina and Cora as sisters. Flora’s later death record has a MacShaw surname reading and a 15/16 February 1939 death-date conflict, which remain separate source qualifications. The original 1921 household records June, daughter aged two, and Welsford, son aged nine months; the index renders these names as Lorne and Weloford. June’s delayed birth application and 1945 marriage identify June Elaine with the James/John James and Dolina/Delina parent pair. Welsford’s nine-month age in the 1921 census cannot be reconciled with the later reported 11 September 1921 birth date without a contemporary natal source.

Leonard Victor 'Len' Hooper

Leonard Victor 'Len' Hooper

Leonard Victor “Len” Hooper married Viola Odissa Henley on 23 November 1935 at St Albans, Woodside, Halifax. He was twenty-four, an Island-born salesman resident in Dartmouth; the marriage names John James Hooper, born at Murray River, PEI, and Dolina McCallum as parents. His death registration records his death on 7 June 1955, describes him as a Department of Highways superintendent resident in Port Wallis, and names wife Viola Henley and parents James Hooper and Dolina McCallum. It reports a birth on 9 February 1911 and burial at Mount Hermon, Dartmouth, on 10 June 1955. The death’s parental NS birthplace entries differ from the marriage’s PEI father entry. Reported 1911 birth and the military collection’s 1908 date remain unresolved; these civil records do not independently prove the service identity.

Roland Marr Hooper

Roland Marr Hooper

Welsford Lewis Hooper

Welsford Lewis Hooper

Welsford Lewis Hooper married Angeline Hazel Jardine on 31 March 1949 at Eureka. He was twenty-eight, an Island-born rigger resident at Pictou Landing; the industry field says WAR PERSONNEL but does not establish a unit, rank or service identity. The marriage names John James Hooper, PEI-born, and Delina MacCallum as parents. His 1959 death registration names mother Dolly McCallum and wife Angeline Jardine. The original records give his wife’s surname as Jardine. The reported birth on 11 September 1921 and death on 7 February 1959 differ from the Legion’s 1920–1958 chronology. His father is strongly supported as the James Hooper of the Dolina family: Leonard’s marriage names John James Hooper and Dolina McCallum, while Leonard’s death names James Hooper and Dolina McCallum. Elmer and Shirley’s marriages also name John James and Delina. This family comparison supports the paternal name variants without resolving the separate civil/Legion chronology or military-service identity. The 1921 manuscript names Welsford, son aged nine months, not Wilford. This contemporary age conflicts with the later 11 September 1921 birth report. Leonard’s marriage and death support the John James/James paternal name variants; the birth-date discrepancy remains unresolved.

Elmer Douglas Hooper

Elmer Douglas Hooper

Elmer Douglas Hooper married Kathleen Elda MacKay on 2 August 1950 at the Presbyterian manse, Pictou Landing. The marriage describes him as twenty-seven, a watchmaker in a retail jewellery business, born at Murray River, PEI, and resident at Pictou Landing. It names John James Hooper, PEI-born, and Dolina MacCallum as his parents, supporting the existing James–Dolina family rather than the Lester–Annabell branch. Kathleen was a twenty-seven-year-old bookkeeper born in Moncton and resident in Fairview. The age is not an exact birth certificate, and the family account does not require every child to have been born on Pictou Island.

Census & Community Records

A census records a community at a particular time. It is one source for tracing a family across generations. Early returns were organized within the wider District or County of Pictou, later boundaries sometimes combined Pictou Island with Fisher's Grant, and by 1901 the island had its own subdistrict: Pictou District 38, Pictou Island A(1).

1901 census snapshot

The Pictou Island census subdivision recorded 159 residents: 70 male and 89 female residents, organized into 36 families living in 36 houses. These community totals summarize the census; individual names and relationships appear on its household pages.

Abbreviations are left as printed. “Charles MacDonald” and “Chas MacDonald” remain separate entries: the list alone does not establish whether they refer to different people.

Sidney, John Ralph and Theodore Hooper

These three brothers belong to the Lester and Annabell (MacLean) Hooper family connected to Pictou Island. The photograph brings their shared wartime experience into the family story.

Theodore “Teddy” appears in the photograph even though he is not named in MacCallum’s twenty-entry list. The honour roll and the photograph each preserve part of the community’s history.

John Ralph was a Lance Corporal, service number F/79900, in the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, R.C.I.C. He died on 26 January 1945 and is buried at Groesbeek.

Island shipbuilding

Shipbuilding complemented fishing and agriculture in the island economy. Two notable operations were Adamson's Shipyard at the east end of Pictou Island and Vincent Turple's boatbuilding business. Their work links island skill and enterprise with the wider maritime life of the Northumberland Strait.

Agriculture and working landscapes

Island households combined fishing with agriculture and other seasonal work. Farms helped support families, while roads, fields, shore workplaces, and factory sites connected daily labour across the island. These surviving landscapes show that Pictou Island's economy depended on several kinds of work rather than a single industry.
