Family records in this tree
Christena Ann May Patterson

Christena Ann May Patterson

Christena Ann May Patterson is recorded in contributed genealogy as a child of Charles Daniel and Agnes Patterson. The 1931 Island census records Christena, thirty-six, as their daughter. Clara Ethel Patterson’s obituary names Tina Patterson among her siblings; the correspondence between Tina and Christena remains unresolved. A marriage date attributed to Christena and Arthur Ross in a contributed tree does not establish that marriage: the original registration for Arthur Ross on 20 January 1927 names Mary Dunbar, eighteen, of Abercrombie, with different parents.

Jennie Bell Patterson

Jennie Bell Patterson

Jennie Bell Patterson was born on Pictou Island on 24 June 1895. Her delayed birth application names her father as Charles Daniel Patterson and her mother as Agnes Ann MacCallum. In a sworn statement dated 13 March 1950, Annie Campbell MacCallum described Jennie as their third child and the widow of David Hibbert MacDonald. These are retrospective birth-registration records. Clara Ethel Patterson’s obituary also names her sister Jenny MacDonald. A separate family-tree attribution to James Alton Anderson remains unresolved and is not treated here as an established marriage.

Helen Patterson Dunbar

Helen Patterson Dunbar

Helen Patterson Dunbar is recorded as Ellen Patterson in her delayed birth registration, which gives 24 February 1897 on Pictou Island and names Charles Dan Patterson and Agnes Ann McCallum as her parents. Her original marriage record names Helen Patterson, daughter of Charles and Agnes Patterson, marrying Clarence Hall Dunbar on 2 October 1918. The shared parents, Island birthplace and compatible marriage age support Ellen and Helen as name variants of this person. Her sister Jennie B. MacDonald supplied the 1962 birth application. The 1920 birth registration of Lydia Agnes Dunbar names Helen Patterson and Clarence Hall Dunbar as her parents; its reported maternal age of 21 differs from the 1897 birth date and remains a source discrepancy. Clara Ethel Patterson’s obituary names a sister Helen Dunbar.

Neil A. Patterson

Neil A. Patterson

The existing family tree and Clara Ethel Patterson’s obituary identify Neil in the Charles and Agnes family. Neil Archie Patterson’s delayed birth application names father Charles D. Patterson, a lighthouse keeper, and mother Agnes Ann MacCallum. It records 30 October with typed 1903 corrected to 1902. The supporting National Registration letter reports October 1903 and suggests 1902 from the age, whereas the Archives index gives 30 January 1902; the disagreement remains explicit. Douglas Gordon Patterson applied in 1967 and is explicitly called BROTHER. That applicant is not automatically identified with the 1917 Douglas Gordon whose record names Elizabeth Horton Patterson as mother and Charles and Agnes as grandparents. The Neil/Pinkie alias and final exact birth chronology remain qualified.

Hector Murdock Patterson

Hector Murdock Patterson

Hector Murdock Patterson’s delayed birth application records a birth on Pictou Island on 21 July 1908 to Charles Dan Patterson, a lighthouse keeper, and Aggie McCallum. His wife applied in April 1974. A certified church extract records the same birth date and baptism on 27 June 1909; this supports 1908 rather than the unsupported 1907 family-tree date. A certified marriage extract records Hector Patterson’s wedding to Miriam Doreen Wong in New Glasgow on 11 August 1956 and names Charles Dan Patterson and Agnes MacCallum as parents. These inspected later certificates support the existing adult identity; the original church ledger and original 1956 marriage registration remain uninspected. The corrected groom-age number is not certified here.

Douglas Patterson — Charles and Agnes family

Douglas Patterson — Charles and Agnes family

Clara Ethel Patterson’s obituary names a brother Douglas. The 1931 Island census places Douglas, fourteen, in Charles and Agnes Patterson’s household with the relationship Son. Douglas Gordon’s delayed birth application reports 11 April 1917 and names Elizabeth Horton Patterson as his mother; Elizabeth Horton Young supplied the application as Mother. An attached family certificate describes him as a grandson of Charles and Agnes. Neil Archie’s delayed birth applicant, also named Douglas Gordon Patterson, describes himself as Brother. These statements preserve different household and family relationship descriptions; the applicant’s exact identity and the obituary brother’s correspondence remain unresolved. The cancelled paternal field is not treated as established paternity.

Elizabeth Horton Patterson / Young

Elizabeth Horton Patterson / Young

Elizabeth Horton Patterson is recorded in her delayed birth application as born on Pictou Island on 20 November 1898 to Charles D. Patterson, an Island-born mailman, and Agnes MacCallum. She applied as Elizabeth H. Young in May 1963; the supporting affidavit uses Lizzie Agnes and Lizzie H. The November date differs from the December date in a 1901 census extract and September in a 1911 extract. Douglas Gordon’s full delayed birth application explicitly names Elizabeth Horton Patterson as his mother, with Elizabeth Horton Young applying as MOTHER in February 1963; parents married NO and the paternal field crossed out. His certified baptism extract calls him a grandson of Charles and Agie. This supports the intervening Elizabeth generation and does not identify him with Clara’s brother Douglas. The proposed 1930 Harold Young marriage identity remains unresolved: its age and unclear maternal ink neither securely join nor exclude it.

Clara Ethel Patterson

Clara Ethel Patterson

A family obituary published in April 2001 identifies Clara Ethel Patterson as a child of Charles D. and Agnes (MacCallum) Patterson and names siblings across the Patterson family's Island and off-Island branches.

  • PIHS family records and contributed genealogy
Margaret Patterson Hooper

Margaret Patterson Hooper

Margaret Julia Patterson married Theodore Lester Hooper on 5 June 1947 at the Presbyterian manse in Pictou. She was twenty, born and resident on Pictou Island, and her parents are explicitly named as Charles Patterson and Agnes McCallum. Theodore, twenty-six, was an Island-born and resident fisherman, with parents Lester Ulrich Hooper and Annabell McLean. His delayed birth application reports 29 July 1920 and the same parent couple, with supporting later Bible certification. These sources support the existing Margaret Patterson Hooper family entry; Margaret Julia is not confused with Julia May Patterson, who died in 1926. Theodore’s natal records and the marriage do not by themselves resolve Lester’s uncertain paternal given-name reading. Theodore’s obituary identifies Margaret Julia Patterson as his wife and describes him as an Island-born welding foreman at Ferguson Industries. The adjacent memorial notice dates his death to 18 February 1982; the obituary gives his age as sixty-one and announces burial in Seaview Cemetery, Pictou.

Malcolm Patterson — Charles and Agnes son

Malcolm Patterson — Charles and Agnes son

Malcolm Lawrence Patterson’s delayed birth application records a birth on Pictou Island on 24 August 1906 to Charles D. Patterson, a lightkeeper, and Aggie MacCallum. Mrs Jennie MacDonald applied in June 1971 and is explicitly described as his SISTER, independently supporting the accepted sibling relationship. A certified family Bible entry and a census-search letter quoting Malcolm in the 1911 and 1921 Charles/Aggie household support that date and family. These are retrospective application and certification sources; the original family Bible and quoted census pages were not newly inspected. Clara Ethel’s obituary also names a brother Malcolm. The record is added to this existing identity, not a new person.

Census & Community Records

A census records a community at a particular time. It is one source for tracing a family across generations. Early returns were organized within the wider District or County of Pictou, later boundaries sometimes combined Pictou Island with Fisher's Grant, and by 1901 the island had its own subdistrict: Pictou District 38, Pictou Island A(1).

Sidney, John Ralph and Theodore Hooper

These three brothers belong to the Lester and Annabell (MacLean) Hooper family connected to Pictou Island. The photograph brings their shared wartime experience into the family story.

Theodore “Teddy” appears in the photograph even though he is not named in MacCallum’s twenty-entry list. The honour roll and the photograph each preserve part of the community’s history.

John Ralph was a Lance Corporal, service number F/79900, in the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, R.C.I.C. He died on 26 January 1945 and is buried at Groesbeek.

Island shipbuilding

Shipbuilding complemented fishing and agriculture in the island economy. Two notable operations were Adamson's Shipyard at the east end of Pictou Island and Vincent Turple's boatbuilding business. Their work links island skill and enterprise with the wider maritime life of the Northumberland Strait.

Agriculture and working landscapes

Island households combined fishing with agriculture and other seasonal work. Farms helped support families, while roads, fields, shore workplaces, and factory sites connected daily labour across the island. These surviving landscapes show that Pictou Island's economy depended on several kinds of work rather than a single industry.
